It was just like any other day on the Seabelle; the sun was bright and the seas were calm.
Hawthorne, as first mate, made his way around the ship to assure everyone was doing things just right. Elowen, his younger sister, trailed along beside him.

Jeanie, the newly-accepted tag-along, was still getting aquainted with life on the sea. Used to her floors staying still beneath her feet, her skin turned a little green as the ship rocked naturally, but she grinned, excited to even be here.

Hawthorne approached the new addition to the crew and stopped next to her. "Are you adjusting alright?"
Offline

She swallowed the rising seasickness, taking a slow breath. "Yes thank you. I will manage, though I appreciate the concern." She said. Everything, from her posture to her wording screamed 'high-breeding'.

Hawthorne nodded, smiling at her. "Good, good. Why don't you help with the sails. We're supposed to be going west."
Offline

"I would be happy to!" She said with a smile in return. "What exactly must I do?"
Offline

He turned to Elowen. "Would you be willing to show her how to man the sails?"
His younger sister nodded and led her over to the mast. "See that rope?" she asked, pointing to one nearby. "Loosen it a bit."
Offline

Jeanie followed her gaze and nodded. "Alright." She said, attempting to do so with no experience.
Offline

Elowen carefully watched her, offering her a tip or two where needed. "You're doing well!"
Offline

Jeanie smiled at the praise and reassurance. "I think I have it..." She tugged a part of the rope.

Elowen studied her handiwork before giving her a nod. "That looks good!"
Offline

Her soft features lit up. "What did it do?"
Offline

"It made the sails looser so the wind doesn't break them."
Offline

Jeanie immediately whipped a notebook out of her satchel and began writing it down quickly.
Offline

Elowen watched her curiously. "You're taking notes?"
Offline

She looked up, pen only faltering for a moment. "Of course! I want to learn everything I can about sailing."
Offline

"Oh." Elowen studied her thoughtfully for a moment longer, but then turned and led her back to her brother Hawthorne. "My brother knows more about ships than I do. Maybe he can help you fill the notebook?"
Offline

She seemed excited at the prospect. "Oh yes that would be wonderful!"
Offline

Smiling, she tapped Hawthorne on the shoulder. "Jeanie wants more tips about sailing."
Hawthorne dropped his telescope and looked back at the two girls. "Oh? What in specific?"
Offline

"All of the specifics if you please." She said, pen poised just above a blank page. "I want to get as much down as possible."
Offline

He ran a hand through his hair. "That's a lot. Do you know what we call parts of a ship?"
Offline

"I've gathered the mast, the sail and the deck, as well as everyone's quarters."
Offline

"Good, good. Do you know which side is port and which is starboard?"
Offline

"Not yet."
Offline

"Starboard is the right side, and port is the left."
Offline

"She jotted that down."
Offline

Hawthorne continued on by listing the different parts of the boat, but paused every now and then to make sure Jeanie could write everything down.

Her pen flew at breakneck speed

By the time he had completely finished with explaining the names for parts of the ship, it was just about time for lunch. "Are you hungry?" he asked when a bell rang.
Offline

She looked up from her furious sprawling. "Hm? Oh yes thank you."
