"Miss Robins, I do not believe you fully understand. If you are caught by the Classari, you will not be "doing your time." You will die."
Offline
Jeanie took a long, slow breath. "I believe in the event of my capture I would be able to negotiate." She said.
Offline
"The Classari will not permit you to negotiate, Miss Robins. They will kill you the moment they capture you." Her expression darkened and the smell of ozone thickened. "Trust me when I say that I know how the Classari work. I have lost much to them and their brutality."
Offline
Jeanie went quiet, not wanting to argue.
Offline
"Tell me, Miss Robins, would you obey me if I ordered you to kill someone?"
Offline
Hawthorne quietly stood by, his expression solemn. Hopefully she has what it takes.
Offline
"I...." She wasn't expecting this.
Offline
Atlantis' calm, unwavering gaze met Jeanie's, waiting for her to speak. "Answer truthfully, Miss Robins. I will not tolerate liars aboard my ship." Without taking her eyes off of Jeanie, she said, "And Hawthorne? Will you please bring us the spearmint honey limeade now?"
Offline
"Of course, Captain." After a slight bow, Hawthorne spun on his heel and went to grab the drink.
Offline
"In all honesty Madame Capitan, I would look for a diplomatic option before using brute force."
Offline
Atlantis gave Hawthorne a courteous nod and turned back to Jeanie. "As would I, Miss Robins, but one does not always have the luxury of such a choice. And you did not answer my question. If I ordered you to end someone's life, would you or would you not follow orders?"
Offline
She squared her shoulders. "Only if I was certain there was no other option."
Offline
Atlantis leaned back in her chair and slowly smiled, studying Jeanie. "Good. I value obedience, loyalty, and discipline in my crew, but I also appreciate a sense of integrity."
Offline
Jeanie looked a bit surprised and relieved at that. "I am here for knowledge and adventure first and foremost. Anything else is simply the prices and pleasures of being here."
Offline
"Well said, Miss Robins." A ghost of a smile danced at her lips. "And now, here's our refreshments." She took the glasses of the chilled spearmint honey limeade with shaved ice from Hawthorne and passed one to Jeanie. "I propose a toast."
Offline
"Oh thank you!" She said, smiling kindly at Hawethorne as she took her glass. "To what are we toasting?"
Offline
"To my new quartermaster." Although she didn't smile, there was kindness in Atlantis' eyes.
Offline
"Quartermaster?" She repeated, surprised.
Offline
Atlantis dipped her head. "I can see that you have a kind and fair nature, and that you're intelliget. That, added with your ability to read and do quick math, judging from your education as a noble lady, makes you a good choice for quartermaster." Her expression softened slightly. "Plus, you seem to have keen sense and sharp observation skills. These are all valuable skills to have as a quartermaster." She leaned in, her voice lowering slightly. "Besides, you have integrity and a kind heart. In our world today, those are valuable commodities that people are often lacking."

Jeanie smiled at that. "Thank you Madame Capitan. I will do all I can to deserve this title." She raised her glass.
Offline
Atlantis raised her glass to Jeanie and clinked it against hers. "To Quartermaster Jeanie Robins."
Offline
"To the Capitan." She replied. "And all her crew."
Offline
At this, Atlantis then took a long sip of the spearmint honey limeade.
Offline
Jeanie did the same.
Offline
Atlantis then carefully sets down her glass and asked, "Quartermaster Robins, do you have any rune powers?"
Offline
"Oh, no I haven't been so fortunate." She replied.
Offline
Atlantis slowly nodded as she thought this over. "Why did you leave your family to join a pirate crew? And will your family chase you or try to get you back?"
Offline
"I wanted adventure. The sea has always seemed like such a foreign, mysterious place full of secrets, and I want to discover them and write them all down." She said, obviously excited by the idea. "As for my family...I should hope not. I did leave them a letter explaining I was going on a voyage for educational purposes."
Offline
"Ahh, so the sea holds a mysterious allure to you as well?" Atlantis smiled slightly. "Then it seems that you will adjust to life at sea rather quickly. That is good, for the sooner you grow accustomed to this lifestyle, the better."
Despite being a legendary pirate captain and one of the famed Four Cardinals, there was something almost aristocratic about Atlantis. From her regal bearing to her smooth, educated words to her stylish, expensive clothes, she could easily be mistaken for an aristocrat.
Perhaps it would be something to ask about, one noblewoman to another.

Jeanie took a moment to figure out how to word her question. "If I may," She started, "You seem of very good breeding."
