"I do actually. I was going to ask earlier....what does a quartermaster do exactly?"
Offline
"You will be responsible for steering, for the most part. Doesn't sound too hard, does it?'
Offline
"Steering the ship?" She gasped.
Offline
"Yes. What else is there to steer?"
Offline
She blushed. "Ah, yes I see your point. And how exactly does one steer a ship?"
Offline
"There's a rudder at the back of the boat. You be in charge of making sure it's leading us in the right direction, and from time to time we might need you behind the wheel."
Offline
"I see." She said, the gears in her head turning. "I'll need to study the ship more closely to see how it works..."
Offline
"You'll get a feel for it before long, I'm sure."
Offline
She nodded.
Offline
"Anything else?"
Offline
She shook her head slightly.
Offline
"Then I suppose that's the end of the tour. Let me take you to the rudder of the ship and I'll show you the basics."
Offline
She grinned. "All right!"

Hawthorne turned around and led her to the back of the ship -- just above the captain's quarters. "That's the rudder." He pointed to a large piece of wood that was connected to the back of the ship. "It connects to something that steers the ship under water."
Offline
She wrote furiously in her book, trying to draw a hypothetical sketch.
Offline
The entire time, Atlantis trailed after her first mate and quartermaster with a faintly amused expression as Hawthorne showed Jeanie around the ship.
Offline
Hawthorne thought about her drawing. "Perhaps we'll have to show you the docks where people build ships."
Offline
She looked excited at the thought. "Oh that would be fascinating!"
Offline
Hawthorne smiled. "It might help you get a better idea of where everything goes so it's easier for you to draw."
Offline
"It definitely would!" She said with a bright smile.
Offline
He looked at his captain expectantly, waiting to see what she had to say.
Offline
"The next time we pull into a port, I'll see if that could be arranged." Atlantis said with a slight smile. Her eyes twinkling, she turned to Jeanie and asked, "Miss Robins, would you like to see how we sail the "Seabelle" so fast?"

"Oh yes!" She said, pen and paper at the ready.

With a mysterious smile, Atlantis looked up at the sails and flicked her wrist. Instantly, a huge gale of wind rushed into the sails and the "Seabelle" glided forward, swift and sleek.
Offline
Jeanie watched with an awestruck express
Offline
Another elegant twirl of her wrist and more powerful gales blew into the billowing white sails of the "Seabelle."
Offline
She watched with fascination.

Atlantis' magicked winds stirred up the sea into small waves that sprayed against the sides of the ship and rustled people's hair and tugged at their clothes. The breezes carried the scent of salty sea air and Atlantis' own hibiscus-jasmine-sea-breeze-ozone fragrance.
Offline
Jeanie watched, rapt by the magic of it. Her brown hair whipped around her face but she didn't even notice it

Atlantis seemed to be absorbed in the magic of it, too. She gazed up at the endless blue sky and big white clouds and bright sunshine, and she worked her magic.
