Someone new was on the Vindicta. It was odd, they hadn't docked or seen land in a while, and everyone was pretty sure there had been no stowaways, but there was definitely a new face among them.
She hadn't spoken to anyone, barely more than a serene smile in the crowd or a silhouette against the moonlight, but she was most definitely there, her long black hair floating on the breeze, even on the stillness of nights, her silky skirts pooling around her bare feet, and her milky skin, pale and unburnt even on the sunniest day.
Approach?

Being a prisoner, Elowen was usually was in the lower part of the ship. However, today could be seen above and wandering around. Curious about the new lady, she strode over to her and quietly studied her.

She was sitting calmly by the edge, looking out at the sea with a faraway expression. Her features were soft and gentle, and her hands were folded in her lap. If it weren't for her lack of shoes and damp hair, she could have been an aristocrat.
Offline
"Um...hello?" she finally asked. "Who are you? And...why are you here? I don't recognize you."
Offline
She looked over calmly, not seeming at all surprised. "Oh hello." She said, her voice light and dreamy. "I am called Beryl."

"Beryl? How long have you been here?"
Offline
"How long?" She repeated. "What do you mean?"
Offline
"How long have you been on the ship?"
Offline
"How long..." She paused a moment then smiled, her giggling like the tinkling of small bells. "Oh this is a human measurement of time, isn't it? I do get so confused by those!"
Offline
Elowen's brow furrowed. "Are...you not human?"
Offline
"Oh no not at all. I mean, yes, but also no." She smiled serenely.
Offline
Elowen just stared at her with wide eyes, unsure what to think of the lady.
Offline
"I really don't see why you humans are so obsessed with time." She said thoughtfully. "It won't stop for you, so why worry?"
Offline
"But..." She faltered, still trying to wrap her head around what Beryl could've been trying to say.
Offline
"Merfolk don't concern ourselves with such things you see. We let time flow by like the tide, effected by it, but not trying to control it."
Offline
"But I thought...merfolk didn't have to deal with time?"
Offline
"If that were true, merbabies would never grow up." She said with that same smile.
Offline
"Oh." Embarrassed, she turned red.
Offline
"Then again," she said. "Perhaps we do exist in a different way than humans as far as time goes. We don't bother with it, so it doesn't so much bother with us. Perhaps if you stopped trying to control or document time, you'd be allowed more of it."
Offline
"But wouldn't stopping the documenting of time mess everything up?"
Offline
"How so? We're doing just fine."
Offline
"But I'd be a hard shift from tracking time to not tracking time."
Offline
"What do you need to track it for?"
Offline
"So...we can meet up with people easier? And record history?"
Offline
She blinked. "Can't you just communicate and store events through shells?"
Offline
"Well...no. You can do that?"
Offline
"Of course." She said. "The sea never forgets, so it makes sure no one else does either."
Offline
Elowen looked like she wanted to say something, but couldn't quite figure out how to ask anymore questions.

Beryl smiled softly. "I think you have the sunset in you." Oookay was this girl alright in the head??
Offline
"I have a sunset in me?" Even more confused, Elowen looked down at herself.
