"Does it? Perhaps I'm using the wrong language. You humans have so many to choose from..."
Offline
"I don't know, maybe?"
Offline
"Est-ce mieux ?" She asked.
Offline
She stared at Beryl blankly, even more confused now.
Offline
"No?"
Offline
"Umm...no." Elowen shuffled her feet.
Offline
"¿Y ahora qué? ..."
Offline
"English please?" she begged.
Offline
"Is this better?"
Offline
"Much," she agreed.
Offline
"Alright then. Your human languages are all so confusing." She smiled.
Offline
"I'm guessing the ocean doesn't have a language, but everyone understands it anyway?"

"Yes of course," she said. "The ocean tells us what we need to know. Haven't you heard it?"
Offline
She hesitated before shaking her head. "...No."
Offline
Beryl gasped as if that was the most horrible thing she'd ever heard
Offline
Elowen cringed. "I...don't get it. Is that...bad?"
Offline
"It is like never knowing your mother's voice!" She said.
Offline
"That doesn't make much sense," she frowned.
Offline
"The sea is always with you here, but you've not once heard it's call? Surely that is why you chose to sail it?"
Offline
She shook her head. "No. I came because my brother came."
Offline
"And you've never heard it once..." She gave her a pitying look.
Offline
Elowen shook her head, still not quite understanding.
Offline
She looked down at the sea with sad eyes, before leaning over the edge of the boat to grab something. Rising again, she now held a conch shell in her hand, though how she got it was a total mystery, as the sea was far too low down to reach even from leaning down.
"Put it to your ear."
Offline
Elowen gently pressed it against her ear. With her ever confused look, she waited for further instructions.
Offline
"Now try to hear it." She coached.
It definitely sounded like something, but wasn't really any different than a normal conch shell.
Offline
"It...sounds like the ocean?" she guessed. Her brother used to tell her about hearing the ocean through shells years ago, but she expected something more this time.
Offline
Beryl gave a small, soft smile. "You'll learn to hear it eventually. It's always talking to us, you just need to learn to listen. "
Offline
"Even without using the shell?"
Offline
"Yes. The shell is simply a tool to help you hear, but someday you may be able to hear without it."
Offline
"Oh." She paused for a moment. "That's strange."
